Mini Mars Bars - By Aimee Claire Timmins
A magical tale of untapped superpowers wrapped in a sweet chocolate covered friendship.
Best friends Bobbi and Lucy can't wait to play in the middle school playground, home to the most amazing monkey bars anyone has ever seen! However when Bobbi runs into unforeseen obstacles that hinder her chances on the bars she discovers a secret superpower that might just be the answer to her playground prayers.
Each metal bar was painted a different colour. Yellow, blue, green, purple, an endless rainbow of overlapping geometric constellations. The dome shaped equipment crisscrossed, one manipulated bar over the other creating a maze of beauty. Taking up half the playground and reaching almost 5 meters in height it was the challenge and reward Bobbi and Lucy had waited so patiently for. ‘I can’t wait! I even did a push up last night to build the muscles in my arms’, Lucy responded curling her biceps in the shape of a muscle man statue. Both girls grinned at each other and started giggling. ‘What’s so funny, losers?’ Francine barreled between the girls, almost knocking Bobbi’s shoulder out of joint. She was a full 2 feet taller than Bobbi. ‘Better watch out’, you wouldn’t want to hurt yourselves and not be able to play on the bars at your first chance.’ Her tone was threatening as she flicked her long ginger plait behind her, hitting Lucy in the face. The girls watched as Francine strutted off like she owned the monkey bars. ‘Just cause she’s in the fifth grade and can use only one hand on the bars she acts like she’s so much better than us.' Lucy grimaced whilst pulling the remains of Francine’s hair out of her eyes.‘Well, not today, we’ll show her!’ Bobbi mimicked Lucy’s muscle man impersonation along with curling her bottom lip under, making the face of an ape. The bell rang and both girls giggled to each other once again as they ran through the front gates.
